Thank you for taking the time to write a response :)

You might also want to monitor the new wiki for the LXDE. http://lxde.org/wiki/Main_Page.

I wanted to thank you for writing this out. As a Linux noob, I found it to be a great help and resource in setting up an old Cyrix P166+ CPU, 128M RAM, with Debian and LXDE. An ancient machine for sure, but with this software setup one that seems quite usable on each mouse click without the constant "hurry up and wait" disk paging!

I simply removed the packages that gave me trouble. As I recall, only exim4 one other package gave me the most difficulty, but I don't remember which. Just "apt-get remove exim4" and run upgrade to see which packages that gives you trouble, and remove them.

I was aware of mpd - but I did not see my need for it. But, I took your word for it, and checked it out!

I installed mpd, mpc, sonata and gmpc. The mpd itself needed some configuration. But once up, and realizing it still played ( state-file ) after rebooting - I kind of got a kick! mpc (cli) rules. Sonata is nice, Gmpc needs some getting used to.

I might, very soon, write a post of what I did - like to keep notes :)

I believe it will fit perfectly for my family, to whom have grown comfortable with Windows, and need an easy transition to linux due some skepticism.

I also have a couple of laptops I plan bringing back to life :)

OK, I gave it a shot, and while it's pretty interesting, it's not for me. I do like the idea of lxappearance though, and if it matures a bit more I suppose it might be a good candidate for inclusion in Xubuntu.
